Hi everybody! In the species that i actually work (Prochilodus lineatus, Salminus brasiliensis, Hoplias malabaricus, and others) the bigger and hard otolith is the lapillus. We perform tranverse cuts in the "nucleus zone" to count rings. We never attempt to perform thin scetion of this otoliths. Are someone cut this otoliths? any example?
The asterisci otoliths are big but too fragile...
I attach an exampple image of this lapillus
p.d.: sorry for the english!
